Weekly Round Up #1: Five interesting things from my week

With the new year upon us and my personal goal planning now underway (Short guide to personal goal planning), in terms of this blog I had a big think about a content plan for the upcoming months.

Part of my planning led me to think of creating more of a short, sharp and informative regular-weekly style of post. Consider it to be like a newsletter, where I encourage you to click out of my blog and indulge in whatever I have shared.

My Prerogative:
The process of sharing what I have found interesting, motivating and/or fun in my week with you the reader helps me set aside time to reflect on it all and I actually simply enjoy sharing interesting things with friends, so hopefully it's a win win setup.

So this is it, welcome to the first of what I hope will be many weekly posts called - 'Watch, read, listen, think, learn: Five interesting things from my week #1'

Enjoy.

#1 & #2 - Podcasts:

I am not entirely sure why, but for me Podcasts have really made a fast and impactful return back into my life, and to be honest I feel all the better for it!

Yes I have listened to Serial which has caused quite the stir on reddit and so should you but that seemed like quite an obvious choice to share for this blog. Consider that a bonus share this week in the rare case that you somehow have managed to escape the office chat of this true life murder case being reopened. (Very very good)

#1 - This American Life

Put simply, I love this Podcast. They grabbed my interest with Serial (same production company) and now they have my full attention with their 544th episode, titled 'Batman'.

This one hour episode explores the really interesting subject of expectations and whether other peoples expectations can alter what one can do and achieve physically.

Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller of NPR's new radio show and podcast Invisibilia (mentioned below) investigate a case of a blind person, who through the simple clicking of their tongue against the roof of their mouth can seemingly 'see', navigate the world, and do most of the activities that a non blind person can do.

The story of Daniel Kish aka 'The Batman' is both incredible and astonishing as to what can and has been achieved when expectations of those around him haven't wavered against the pressure of conventional thinking and teaching as to what a blind person can, can't and should't do.

This podcast is informative, inspiring, motivating, astonishing and will maybe open your mind as to the extent that expectations can mould other people.

#2 - NPR Invisibilia podcast 'Fearless'

I stumbled upon this new podcast the other day - launched just this Month, Invisibilia, meaning "all the invisible things" in Latin explores "the intangible forces that shape human behaviour - things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions."

This particular one hour episode is all about fear - discussing what fear is both physiologically and psychologically, what would a world without fear be like, and how/if we can overcome fear.

Fear; animals can sense it and use it to communicate danger to one another, and there is even evidence to suggest humans can physiologically sense it from other humans.

I found this podcast interesting because fear is something that the vast majority of us have in one form or another.  Apparently there are only about 400 people in the world that truly are void of fear, this is further explained in the first half of the podcast where an insightful and rare case of a woman with no fear is interviewed.

The second half of the show explores how the rest of us might be able to "turn off" fear.

#3 - Book:

What Everybody is Saying by Joe Navarro

This book is a fantastic read about reading body language that could really help you in both your professional and personal life.

The synopsis from Amazon wraps things up well - "Read this book and send your nonverbal intelligence soaring. Joe Navarro, a former FBI counterintelligence officer and a recognized expert on nonverbal behavior, explains how to "speed-read" people: decode sentiments and behaviors, avoid hidden pitfalls, and look for deceptive behaviors. You'll also learn how your body language can influence what your boss, family, friends, and strangers think of you."

#4 - Facebook @ Work:

With over 1 billion active monthly users globally and 12 million users in Australia (which is a huge % of the population between 14 and 65), the word dominate springs to mind.

So with that in mind, Facebook have recently made another potentially dominating move into a space that they have only really have a presence on whilst the boss isn't looking over at your computer monitor during work hours; that is Facebook at work.

In the words of Facebook themselves Facebook at Work ".....lets you create a work account that is separate from your personal Facebook account. With a Facebook at Work account, you can use Facebook tools to interact with co-workers. Things you share using your work account will only be visible to other people at your company."

So think of it as an intranet, wrapped up with file sharing and instant messaging capabilities on a platform that most people are already extremely familiar with. Internal training costs will be minimised and this only gives the giant yet another opportunity to grow their data insights furthermore and no doubt further increase advertising opportunities / revenues.

Here are a few insightful articles from other commentators on Facebook at Work that are worth reading:

#5 - A Short Message of Equality:

New art instalment of wise words found on the walls of bondi beach.

"We are all equal in the fact that we are all different.

We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same.

And that's why equality is for everyone."

I concur.
